Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Scones
I’ve been wanting to make gluten-free scones for a very long time! I hadn’t tried to because scones can be fickle, right?
The reality is that many scones are just too dry for me.
Finding the perfect balance between crunch and softness is the key. I am happy to report that these chocolate chip gluten-free scones are literally perfect.
My inspiration came from The Wholesome Yum Easy Keto Cookbook – which I highly recommend, by the way. There is a cranberry scones recipe that is just divine and I thought to myself – I HAVE to try this out with chocolate chips and orange extract.
Now, the orange extract is optional, but combining orange and chocolate together is just mouthwatering.
Are Gluten Free Scones Dry?
Scones should not be overly dry. As I said before, many ARE dry and leave you needing more to drink to just be able to swallow.
Scones ARE meant to be enjoyed with a warm drink, but that shouldn’t be a requirement to simply swallow.
These gluten-free scones are most certainly NOT dry and are quite moist in the center while still maintaining the look and feel of the scones you are used to.
Are Scones Gluten Free?
These scones are most certainly gluten-free. The traditional scones that you’d find in a store or at Starbucks are most likely NOT gluten-free.
Are There Eggs in Scones?
In this particular recipe – yes! Some scone recipes do not contain eggs.
What I find is that eggs provide a little more fluff and make the (already dense) scones a little less dense. It also boosts the flavor!
And with just one egg, this low carb scones recipe is perfect on all fronts!
What Are Good Scones Toppings?
My favorite topping for these delicious gluten-free scones is low carb chocolate! This sugar-free chocolate syrup sauce is perfect to lightly drip over the top!
Berry sauces would also taste fantastic!
I’ll even admit to using melted butter. Shhhh……
The original recipe from The Wholesome Yum Easy Keto Cookbook that this gluten-free scone recipe was adapted from was cranberry scones!
Two simple modifications to make those gorgeous scones. Instead of orange extract, you’ll want to use 2 tablespoons of orange zest and instead of chocolate chips, you’ll want to use 1/2 cup fresh or frozen cranberries!
Easy Peasy right?
How To Make Gluten Free Scones
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
In a medium bowl, combine almond flour, sweetener, baking powder and sea salt. Mix well.
In a small bowl, combine melted coconut oil, vanilla and orange extract. Using a fork or small whisk, beat until combined.
Add wet mixture and chocolate chips to dry mixture and fold with a spatula. I also find using my hands to combine it works the best.
Place the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and form it into a disc about 1 inch thick and 6 inches round.
Cut into 6-8 slices and place about an inch apart.
Bake 18-22 minutes until golden brown.
Cool COMPLETELY on the baking sheet before moving them, otherwise, they will fall apart.

- 1/3 cup sweetener (for low carb, I use erythritol or monkfruit)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- (optional) 1/4-1/2 teaspoon orange extract
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup chocolate chips (for low carb, I use Lily's Chocolate Chips)
